This is an individual health model, which means that it has to do with how individuals think and respond to health situations and decisions. It takes many different factors into account such as, age, ethnicity, access to health materials, general health knowledge, and the individuals personality. The Health Belief Model tries to identify how a person thinks and if they will take certain health actions. Furthermore, it will factor in if more information or education would change an individual's mind about taking action. For example, when a young college student decides to have sex, will they use a condom? This model shows that the student in question will make the choice to use a condom if they believe it will protect them from STD's, or pregnancy; if they believe not using a condom will increase the risk of negative health consequences they will wear one. Finally, if they are properly informed on how to use a condom, they will be more likely to use one.
